Window Furnishings Explained

CURTAINS
Gone are the days when curtains were considered daggy, they have come back into fashion in a big way. With the introduction of new types of decorative rods and tracks, such as the wave track / ripple or S fold track, sheer curtains never looked so good on your windows.

Fully lined curtains act as a very good insulator against cold and heat, teamed with a pelmet they are the most effective way to block out cold in the winter and heat in the summer. If you are sensitive to light in your bedroom, lined curtains with a pelmet installed high above the window and wider than the window frame give you almost 100% block out.

See below for some examples of lined curtains with a padded pelmet and sheer ripple fold curtains

BLINDS
There are so many options for blinds these days, we are spoilt for choice.
Some of the different types are:

  • roller or holland blinds
  • venetian blinds
  • roman blinds (lined or unlined)
  • honeycomb blinds / cellular blinds
  • Sheer day / night roller blinds

There is a huge range of fabrics available for roller blinds, either in a sheer, light filter or block out, that they have become the most popular choice for most windows. Wilson Fabrics is an Australian company who makes their own fabrics for roller blinds right here in Wangaratta, Victoria.

Watch this short video highlighting Aussie manufacturing.

Roman blinds can be made up in any fabric imaginable and can really add some personality to your interiors. As your interior decorator, I have access to many fabric wholesalers, skilled workrooms and installer so that you can get a professional result and a totally unique look.

See below for some examples of roman blinds and roller blinds in previous projects.

PLANTATION SHUTTERS
These are the grand old dame of window treatments and add a lot of class to your windows. Made popular in the USA cotton plantations we adopted plantation shutters in the 1980's.

These can be made up in a number of materials such as:

  • Western Red Cedar - high quality and renewable material
  • Basswood or Poplar - a more economical option
  • Plastics - PVC, polymers & Thermalite
  • Aluminium - for outdoor use

They give you so much flexibilty by tilting the blades you can deflect the light as well as let in a cool breeze. A great deal of the world's plantation shutters are manufactured in China, however there are a number of good quality makers in Australia.
